Al-Farabi Kazakh National University also called KazGU or KazNU, is a university in Almaty, Kazakhstan. Named after the Eastern philosopher and scholar al-Farabi, it is one of the country’s largest universities. Al-Farabi Kazakh National University has the largest campus in Kazakhstan with an area of 100 hectares, in one of the most beautiful areas of Almaty. The education infrastructure of the campus consists of 13 education buildings with a total area of 165,000 m2 and scientific laboratories with a total area of 18,940 m2. There are ten dormitories on campus and three more faculties: Geography, Biology, Preparatory and International Relations.
In 2001, the government classified it as a “national” university. More than 20,000 students, post-graduates and PhD students study at KazNU, and there are more than 2500 faculty members working at KazNU, including 400 doctors of science, professors and more than 800 candidates of science and associate professors.
Like other universities founded under the Soviet system, it is highly centralized. The university has more than 19.000 students who study at 14 schools in Science, Engineering Humanities and Social Sciences.The university maintains close relations with leading universities from around the world. al-Farabi Kazakh National University joined the Indo-US Collaboration for Engineering Education.
Every year world-leading scholars including Nobel Prizewinners such as John Forbes Nash, Finn E. Kydland, Roger D. Kornberg, Christopher Pissarides and Murray Gell-Mann deliver lectures before al-Farabi KazNU students. More than 500 international professors from 20 different countries teach at the university. The university offers programs taught exclusively in English, at the same time, it provides opportunity to international students to study Kazakh and Russian.lt has the biggest campus and sport facilities in the Central Asia
Al-Farabi Kazakh National University (KazNU) is the leading institution of Kazakhstan and one of the top universities in Central Asia. Today, KazNU is proud of its alumni who are Ministers, Governors, Top Managers, members of Parliament, CEOs of National corporations and Olympic Champions. In addition, KazNU students are strong in sports and they were medal winners in the following Olympic Games such as Beijing-2008, London-2012 and Rio-2016 Olympic Games. The University is going to celebrate its 85′ anniversary in 2019.
